CHED and REX Education recognize model HEIs’ flexible learning and innovations through Gawad Edukampyon Awards 2021

In a time of great difficulty and challenges not just for the education sector but for the whole country, many schools and educators rose to the task to continue providing holistic and enriching learning for students throughout the country. It’s time for these heroic efforts to take the spotlight and be acknowledged.

The Gawad Edukampyon Awards 2021 was created for this very purpose: to celebrate innovations and excellence by higher education institutions (HEIs) during the most challenging time in recent history, and bring together educators and institutions to create, refine, and implement innovative programs suited to create better and sustainable learning in the 21st century’s new normal of education.

Launched in January 30, 2021 by Rex Education and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the Gawad Edukampyon Awards 2021 is driven by CHED’s #WeLearnAsOne Bayanihan efforts and Rex Education’s Edukampyon advocacy.

“I encourage all HEIs to join the Gawad Edukampyon and showcase your innovations. It is during these challenging times that we must empower and inspire each other, draw strength and learn from one another,” said CHED Chairperson Prospero “Popoy” De Vera.

Flexible learning is here to stay

Rex Education has always rallied behind the Edukampyon advocacy, which calls for the involvement of the whole community and all education duty-bearers to ensure all students are Filipino Whole Learners—healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented inside and outside their learning environments. This has become especially important and relevant given the context and changes in education in the new normal, where flexible learning has become a more viable modality for the years to come.

“[There is] no going back to the traditional, full-packed, face-to-face classrooms. The Commission has adopted a policy that flexible learning will continue in the school year 2021 and thereafter,” said De Vera. This statement comes after the release of CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 04, series 2020, “Guidelines on the Implementation of Flexible Learning,” which also presents flexible learning as a sustainable system that should be part of every school’s Learning Continuity Plan (LCP).

 Given the new investments of many HEIs in technology, teacher training, and retrofitting of facilities to adapt with flexible learning, and with this modality already long-adapted by many universities across the globe, it only makes sense for institutions to embrace the new landscape that flexible learning brings. This adaptability and learner-centered approach to education has always been at the core of Edukampyon, which—through the many studies and real-world applications it draws from—argues that learning should not just be delivered from the classroom curriculum, but from the whole community and through every possible learning moment.

 “The Edukampyon agenda lobbies that as members of the community, everyone is part of this learner-centered solution, and are thus duty bearers morally obliged to support initiatives that will benefit our learners. We acknowledge that the efforts to realize the vision of Edukampyon is continuously growing. We may be at the very first steps of this years-long movement. But taking the first step is always the most crucial moment in every revolution. With the help of every HEI and of everyone, we hope that this first step leads to a march where we create more programs and campaigns that would allow us to be champions for the Whole Filipino Learner. And we hope Gawad Edukampyon Awards 2021 will lead that way,” said Don Timothy Buhain, CEO of Rex Education.

 

 Award categories and prizes

There are four categories under the Gawad Edukampyon Awards. Each category will be awarded to the school who has implemented a project or initiative that best exemplifies excellence in the particular field and has been demonstrated during the pandemic.

The Gawad Edukampyon for Excellence in Flexible and Responsive Management is an award to be given to HEIs who created policies or specific projects and practices that ensured the continuity of education, as well as the health, safety, and well-being of students, faculty, staff and school-community during times of disruption. This includes efforts that set a clear framework and system for the transition and integration of flexible learning approaches, excellent and strategic leadership and management, and innovative management approaches that provided tangible support to the staff and students’ well-being especially during pandemic.

The Gawad Edukampyon for Excellence in Flexible Teaching and Learning Innovation is an award to be given to HEIs with exemplary innovative and adaptive learning approaches and solutions, including innovative platforms, tools, pedagogies, and appropriate learning assessments; efforts to promote learner-centered teaching; technology-enhanced or arts-based learning; setting up mobile open online courses (MOOCs); or creating significant reforms in the curriculum to accommodate the changes in the delivery of learning.

The Gawad Edukampyon for Responsive Research and Development is an award to be given to HEIs with outstanding research and development of products that significantly contributed to the community through research and materials dissemination to other LGUs or other HEIs, as well

as researches that have been used as an input to public policy or adopted into a local community project, and case assessments or action-research that can improve the government’s COVID-19 response.

The Gawad Edukampyon for Public Service and Community Engagement is an award given to HEIs with outstanding outreach projects that alleviated challenges experienced by their community because of COVID-19. This includes those that have increased community resilience or improved response to the pandemic and communication campaigns that have engaged the community or resulted to transformative decision-making.

Two winners will be awarded for each category—one from the public sector and another from the private sector. Each award category winner will receive a cash prize and an educational resources package worth P200,000. The narratives of all winners will be featured in the Rex Education-led publication, Padayon.


How to join

All HEIs who wish to participate in the Gawad Edukampyon Awards can now submit their letter of intent (LOI) signed by the HEI head or authorized representative to edukampyonsecretariat@gmail.com with the subject heading “The Screening Committee, Gawad Edukampyon 2021”. The deadline of submission of LOI is on June 4, 2021.

  1. To be honest I was really sad for this news since a lot of students are complaining about the decision of ched that there's no going back to traditional, full-packed, face-to-face classrooms. Maybe one of the reasons is having unstable internet connection and not everyone can afford gadgets that is important in this flexible learning which is online class. I hope that they will think about it again.

  2. this is a good initiative by CHED and REX Education to recognize Higher Education Institutes with their innovation of their learning system because of the pandemic. This is also a good motivation for school to really develop learning programs that could further help students as well as our educators.

  6. We students need best quality of education. I guess, I severely feel sad to that new way of online learning. Face to face classes is much better than distance to learning. Naiintindihan po namin na hindi pa pwede makabalik sa normal sa ngayon pero sana naman CHED maibalik parin ang face to face class balang araw para may maayos kaming matututunan saaming pag aaral.

Kaming mag aaral ay kailangn ng ligtas at magtagumpay na edukasyon sa ngyon Hindi pa hindi pa pwedeng magkaroon ng face to face classes dahil sa sa patuloy na pagkalat ng covid-19 ay mas kailangan ng mga estudyante nang ligtas edukasyon sa pamamagitan ng modular system kung sa ngayon ay hindi pa pwedeng magkaroon ng face to face classes pero sana magkaroon ng face to face class pagkatapos ng pandemyang Ito pero sana naman CHED mag karoon na ng face to face classes pag katapos ng pandemyang Ito upang hindi na mahirapan ang mga magulang at estudyante sa pagsagot ng kanilang mga module at mas marami pang matutunan ang mga estudyante sa face-to-face classes

Sa artikulong ito nakapaloob kung paano pinaplano ng CHED at DEPED ang pagpapatakbo ng eskwelahan lalo na sa panahon ngayon, na kung saan tayo ay may hinaharap na malaking problema, hindi lang saating bansa kundi pati sa ibang bansa. Mababasa din dito kung paano sila dumiskarte o gumawa ng paraan upang mapagpatuloy padinnang pag aaral ng kabataan kahit hindi tayo mag face to face class.

Sa artikulong ito nakapaloob kung paano pinaplano ng CHED at DEPED ang pagpapatakbo ng eskwelahan lalo na sa panahon ngayon, na kung saan tayo ay may hinaharap na malaking problema, hindi lang saating bansa kundi pati sa ibang bansa. Mababasa din dito kung paano sila dumiskarte o gumawa ng paraan upang mapagpatuloy padinnang pag aaral ng kabataan kahit hindi tayo mag face to face class. Nakatutulong sila sa mga estudyante sapagkat sila ang nag aanunsyo kung ano ang dapat gawin ngayon taon o sa susunod na taon.

Ngayong nasa gitna tayo ng krisis sa COVID19 at hindi pa nababakunahan ang karamihan sa mga estudyante hindi pa pinapayagan na magkaroon ng Face-to-Face Classes para sa kaligtasan ng mga mag aaral at mga guro. Sa aking nabasang artikulo ang CHED ay nagpaplano o pinag aaralan kung ano ang mainam na paraan upang makapag aral at may matutuhan parin ang mga estudyante sa gitna ng ating hinaharap na problema na ang kumakalat na virus hindi lang dito sa Pilipinas pati narin sa buong mundo. Ngayong patapos na ang School Year 2020-2021 nagpaplano ang CHED kung paanong paraan ng pagtuturo ang gagawin nila sa School Year 2021-2022 upang maging ligtas parin at madaos ang lahat katulad ng nangyari ngayong taon.

Ngayung panahon ng pandemya kaylangan ng mag-aaral Ang ligtas na pag-aaral para sa ating kaligtasan kaya Ang pag aaral ng mga Bata ngayun ay sa pamamagitan ng modular na Kung saan karamihan sa mga mag aaral ay nahihirapan,kaya Ang iba sakanila'y gusto ng mag face to face klases Lalo na ngayun ay patapos na Ang taong 202.kaya Ang CHED ay pinagpaplanohan Ang pag aaral sa darating na taong 2022 at pinag aaralan nila Kung face to face ba o modular parin Ang ating pag aaral ngunit ng dahil Hindi parin nawawala Ang covid-19 kaylangan parin nating mag tiis sa pag aaral sa pamamagitan ng modular para narin sa ating kaligtasan.

  13. Hindi maitatanggi na marami mag-aaral ang lubhang nalungkot dahil sa pahayag ng CHED na wala na umanong pagbalik sa tradisyunal na paraan ng pag-aaral. Tunay na ito'y hamon hindi lamang sa mga mag-aaral, kung hindi pati na rin sa mga guro at institusyon/ paaralan.

    Sa kabila na ang karamihan ay nakararanas ng 'existenial crisis' ngayong pandemya, ang programang ito ay magsisilibing motibasyon at magdudulot ng lakas ng loob sa lahat upang ipagpatuloy ang paglaban sa gitna ng sitwasyon dahil sa COVID.

    Hindi man natin masasabi kung ito na nga ba talaga ang 'New Normal' pero nakatutuwang isipin na ang lahat ay kumikilos upang masigurado ang magandang kalidad na edukasyon, lalo na't para sa aming mga mag-aaral.

Di na bago sa atin ang humarap ng mga problema sa ating bansa ,ngunit iba itong pandemyang dumating sa atin,hindi lang sa bansang pilipinas kundi pati narin sa buong mundo ay nararamandaman ito,iba ito,dahil pati kaming mag aaral ay naapektuhan. Nakakalungkot lang isipin na hindi pa pwedeng mag aral kaming mga kabataan sa paraang nakagisnan namen na kung tawagin ay face to face classes. Ngunit kahit paano ay masaya ako dahil gumagawa ng paraan ang DEPED at isa narin ang "GAWAD EDUKAMPYON" na ito para patuloy parin ang pag aaral naming mga estudyante,sa paraan modular at online classes.inaamin ko na nahihirapan ako sabihin nanating hindi lang ako kundi pati lahat ng mga estudyante. Ngunit nag papasalamat parin ako dahil patuloy na sumusuporta ang mga gantong proyekto para sa aming mag aaral.

Sa mga panahong ito ay 'di pa natin natatamasa ang kalayaan hindi sa mga pananakop ng mga karatig bansa kundi ang pananakop ng COVID-19 sa ating bansa at sa buong mundo kaya't ang lahat ng tao ay mas lalong nagiingat dahil nga sa nasabing problema at mas lalo itong lumalala dahil may mga natatagpuan na mas malalang sakit at dumarami pa ang pagkalat nito kaya't sanhi nito ay maraming mga tao ang naapektuhan.Kaya't ang CHED at DEPED ay nagtutulungan at gumagawa ng paraan para ang mga mag-aaral ay mas may matutuhan sa kanilang pag-aaral lalo na ang mga walang connection sa kanilang guro at ako'y nalulungkot na walang magaganap na face to face sa darating na pasukan pero alam Kong may dahilan sila para rin sa ating kapakanan at kaligtasan at ako'y nagpapasalamat na 'di parin sila sumusuko sa pagtutulong sa atin~~.
